“David! Come inside now. It is time for bed. And you don’t want to be late for your first lesson with Master Thornegood tomorrow do you?” His mother called from the kitchen window of their house. Mother was always calling him in from the pretty stars that shined in the sky. He loved looking at them and was not happy for bed time.
David reluctantly walked up the steps of his front porch and opened the front door.
David’s Father was sitting in his old rocking chair and talking to an old man that looked and smelled funny. He thought the smelly man looked funny because he was wearing a long brown jacket made of furs. Around his neck he had a small set of antlers that came up and around like a shield for his face. The funniest thing though, was that he had only one sandal on.
He couldn’t hear what they were talking about because Father began whispering when he came in. He wanted to go to Father now and ask him what they were saying because the smelly man looked scared.
“Come along now David. We must help Zacharias fall asleep if you are to have any hope for sleep yourself.” Mother ushered David up the stairs and to his and his little brother’s room. David did not like that he had to share a room with Zacharias at all. He cried all the time and sometimes he smelled almost as bad as the old man downstairs.
After David’s mother tucked him in and sang a lullaby to Zacharias and him, she stood to leave the room. When she reached the door, David asked, “Mother, could you leave the door open so that the light comes in?”
“Of course, my sweet angel. I love you two more than the moons love the night sky. Sleep now my little one.” David did not know this would be the last time his mother spoke to him.
